We really can’t imagine driving a vehicle without tires. If there were no tires, the entire design of any vehicle would be extremely different.
Tires are responsible for delivering a safe ride and ensuring the optimal performance of any two- or four-wheeler vehicle. For this reason, selecting the right type of tire and knowing the correct maintenance procedure is significant.
This proves to be true for all vehicles, including electric bikes.
A wealth of information is available on e-bike tires, and it is quite normal to run into confusion.
But don’t worry! I am going to walk you through the world of e-bike tires so in the end, you know how to choose and maintain your e-bike tires confidently.
Tires in e-bikes are designed for high-performance activities. They ensure longer ranges, faster acceleration, and greater speeds. Thus, e-bike tires must be durable enough to ensure all of these are uncompromised.
Unlike regular bikes, e-bikes have a battery, motor, and controller. This increases the total weight, requiring a set of sturdy rubber to complement the heavier load.
When choosing e-bike tires, first ask yourself these questions:
– Why will I use the e-bike?
– Will I be off-roading frequently?
Have you got your answers to the above questions? That’s great! It’s important to understand that e-bike tires are of various sizes, and you need to know which is the most suitable for you.
E-bikes come with wheels of different sizes, ranging from 16-inch to 29-inch. You can also come across 700c tires, but the most popular ones are 20-inch and 26-inch tires.
So, how do you differentiate between 20-inch tires from a 26-inch? Let us find out!
16-inch: These tires are small and most commonly used on folding e-bikes. 16-inch tires are designed to be compact, lightweight, and easy to carry.
However, the smaller the size, the lesser will be the traction. Hence, riding uphill or across rough terrains on 16-inch tires can be particularly challenging. If you want to ride faster, you must unleash great power to pedal as fast as possible. Navigating rocks on the road can be difficult, and the rider needs to evade such obstacles cautiously.
20-inch: 20-inch tires are also used on folding e-bikes, similar to their 16-inch counterparts. These tires lack stability on rough terrain, and to go faster, you will have to pedal as much as possible. Fond of lightweight and foldable e-bikes? Then, choosing 20-inch tires is the right option for you!
24-Inch: These are large and built to endure tough roads like a pro. Compared to 16-inch and 20-inch tires, 24-inch tires offer a comfortable riding experience. This implies you don’t need to pedal with all your strength when conquering small climbs. 24-inch wheels make the perfect option if you need an e-bike that can efficiently maneuver urban and suburban locations.
26-Inch: Want your e-bike to go faster and smoother on different types of terrain? You can’t go wrong with 26-inch wheels. From mountain riding to exploring the sandy shores, these tires are perfect for use in cities as well as off-roading. 26-inch tires offer better grip and improved maneuverability than other tire sizes.
700c – 700c e-bike tires have often been confused with 700cc, which are completely different. While ‘700cc’ refers to the motor power, 700c is the tire size as per the French system – 700 is the diameter in millimeters and ‘c’ is the width of the tire. Additionally, I’ve seen people often consider 700c to be 700 centimeters, which isn’t true.
These are tires with a narrow width and smoother tread, ideal for traveling on pavements. For example, if you need to ride on rough surfaces quite often, for professional off-roading, choosing thicker 700c tires is the most suitable option. Thicker 700c tires come with larger widths and provide enhanced control.
On the other hand, if you need to commute on pavements every day, opt for thinner 700c tires. Narrow 700c tires reduce resistance as you drive, making your ride smoother and helping you go faster.
Road e-bike tires offer excellent performance, efficiency, and durability for urban commuting and recreational cycling. They are ideal for riders seeking increased range, speed, and overall efficiency on smooth surfaces. With a width measuring between 23 and 25mm, these tires are made of lightweight materials to boost acceleration and reduce rotational weight. The lightweight design of these tires enables you to maneuver the e-bike easily up the hills or when moving through traffic.
However, they may not suit riders who plan to venture off-road or regularly encounter challenging weather conditions.
Off-road tires are characterized by their rugged tread design that helps improve traction on irregular surfaces, including snow, sand, mud, and more. These tires are wider than other e-bike tires, establishing greater contact with the ground. As a consequence, it offers better grip and control on rough surfaces.
The best option for adventure riders!
I’ve saved the best for the last – hybrid tires. These tires offer the best of both worlds – regular paths and off-road. Hybrid tires produce less friction, which results in increased speed. Even traction and durability remain uncompromised when using hybrid tires on smooth roads or rough terrain.
Everything is good about e-bikes until you have flat tires. The sad part is flat tires are common in e-bikes compared to regular cycles since e-bikes are heavier and run faster due to the motor. As a result, the rear portion of the e-bike bears the brunt of its weight, pushing the wheels further to the ground.
I understand how flat tires can disrupt your day and waste valuable time. But it doesn’t have to! There are many ways to avoid having flat tires, which I’ll discuss below!
Low tire pressure is equal to flat tires. Check your e-bike tire pressure at regular intervals to prevent flat tires. Many prefer to have low tire pressure as it makes the ride more pleasant, but that is certainly not a recommended practice.
Low-pressure tires absorb more shocks and bumps if you’re traveling on rough and uneven roads. Consequently, most of the surface area of the wheels comes in contact with the ground, leading to flat tires.
What to do in case your e-bike tires are punctured? Anti-flat tire sealant can come to your rescue! Just coat the interior of the tube by squeezing the sealant into the valve stem. You can see the hole is immediately filled up and creates a plug that often lasts longer than the surrounding tube or tire. Using anti-flat tire sealant is an ounce of prevention worth more than the cure.
Low tread in e-bikes calls for tire replacement. Tires often show cracks due to worn-out tread; if the rubber is old and thin, the risk of flat tires is even greater. Besides, low tread doesn’t affect the safety of your ride only but efficiency too. E-bikes with worn tire treads use more electricity, requiring more frequent charging than usual. Also, I can’t help but warn you that tires with poor tread can potentially burst, causing an accident.
A tire liner is a strip of plastic put in between the tube and tire. It acts as an extra layer that protects the tires against punctures from sharp items like glass or thorns. Tire liners pass the effectiveness test, but they make the tires heavier. This, in turn, impacts the rolling capability. On the contrary, if you travel an area loaded with debris, thorns, or other sharp items, using tire liners could do you more good than harm.
Upgrading your tires is the last step to keep flat tires at bay. There’s no need to get the most premium-quality tires (unless that is your choice), but investing in high-quality tires will save you from the hassles of flatting in the middle of the road.
As I discussed above, maintaining the right tire pressure is one of the most effective ways to avoid flat tires. Tire pressure is specified on the sidewall of the tire and is important because the higher the tire pressure, the more efficient the riding experience. Whether for cars or e-bikes, tire pressure automatically decreases with time, and it happens rather quickly.
A secret tip: To avoid flat tires, my hybrid e-bike tire measuring 700x38C must be pumped every 7-10 days to offer the best riding experience.
Every type of e-bike tire comes with a recommended tire pressure (PSI) mentioned on the sidewall. As a general rule of thumb, to know if your tires need to be aired, you can check by squeezing to see if they’re firm.
Road e-bikes must maintain tire pressure between 80 to 130 PSI, hybrid e-bikes 50 to 70 PSI, and off-roading e-bikes 30 to 50 PSI.
